Audrey's Brace!!

Our sweet little Audrey was born with something called hip dysplasia. They say it is most common in first born, girls, and babies that are breech. She was all three of those things! I guess when you have hip dysplasia your leg is loose in the hip socket. For some babies it can be dislocated so bad that you can pop their legs in and out of the hip socket very easy. Thank goodness this is not the case with Audrey. Hers isn't too bad. Because that is the case the doctors say if we do preventive things right now she should be fine and shouldn't have any problems when she is older. For people that aren't treated when they have this they could end up with a limp, one leg shorten then the other, or often have hip replacements very young. The doctors had her in a harness to keep her legs in a certain place in her hip socket. She was in this for about the first 3 months of her life! Everything looked good! We were so glad to have her out of it! It was such a pain. I went to have an x-ray taken of her hip a couple of weeks ago to see how her hip was doing and the doctor decided to put her in a brace for another 2-3 months. He wants her hip to be perfect and he feels like it's not quite there yet. Poor Audrey!! It's like she is doing the splits all the time. She even has to sleep in it! She hated it at first!! She has been wearing for about a week and a half and is doing a lot better in it now. I'm just so glad she isn't crawling yet or she would really be miserable!!

This was Audrey's first day in her new brace! She was so happy about it! NOT!! (yes, I know she has a huge mouth :) !)

This is her laying in her bed! I would hate to sleep like that and not be able to move around. She has still been sleeping through the night about half of the time. It is amazing what babies will put up with!

This is what her first brace looked like. She couldn't even straighten out her legs!

Poor lil Audrey! It's good you're taking care of it now while she's so little, though. Give her a hug from us.

aw man! I can totally relate-- at least there's no metal rods coming out. I wanna get your brace. We are having an x-ray next Monday to see if she still has a space in her hip. I have to admit, I have not been good about having Bray wear her brace. She has so many contraptions as it is, I just want her to be able to sleep peacefully. Sometimes she's like a robotic machine! But enough about us.. I'm so sorry Audrey. I thought she wasn't minding it before? Good luck. Thank you for explaining it so well. I even learned a bit. Stick with it.. the future is everything, right?

That has to be hard. I hope she is used to it by now. She is perfect in every other way.
I'm guessing you have to take that off every time you change her.
That would not be fun.
